Even though the Texas Legislature meets every odd year, the work of the MHA of Greater Houston Advocacy and Policy team continues year-round, and the start of 2026 has been no exception. The 18 months between legislative sessions is known as the “interim,” a period that helps shape the priorities for the next session. During this time, legislative leaders issue interim charges, which direct committees to study key issues, identify gaps, and explore policy solutions.
To help keep mental health a priority in Austin, the Advocacy and Policy team submitted recommended interim charges for legislators to consider during upcoming hearings. Our proposals focused on issues related to education, health care, and workforce development. Specifically, we recommended studying:
- How artificial intelligence is being used in mental health care in Texas, including potential benefits, risks, and safeguards needed to protect patients—especially children and adolescents.
- Barriers that prevent students from accessing mental health support in schools, including counselor availability, funding for services, and how schools measure and improve the effectiveness of these supports.
This work reflects our collective impact approach, developed with and informed by community perspectives, stakeholder engagement, and the needs we see across the region.
