“Law enforcement wasn’t designed to manage people with mental health crises,” said Renae Vania Tomczak, CEO of Mental Health America of Greater Houston. “We tend to think that people who have mental health issues are a danger, but that is not always the case. If we think about the flight or fight response, law enforcement has not been trained to think of the flight piece. They do what they can to mitigate the situation, but between their training and a physician’s training, it’s two totally different worlds.”

For some, the incredible sense of isolation and fear has deepened into depression. Left untreated, prolonged depression can result in serious physical health concerns, substance misuse, or even suicidal ideation.
We need your help to turn this unprecedented trend around. Think about the difference you want to make in our community on this final day of 2020. Please give your friends, neighbors, and loved ones the lifesaving gift of mental wellness. Your investment underwrites free access to mental health screenings and wellness information at MHAHouston.org. Working together, we’ll provide suicide prevention trainings for teachers, students, veterans and others who have suffered economic and psychological trauma this year.

Be the light in someone else’s darkness. Make a gift of any amount today at mhahouston.org/donation
