Meet Karen! Karen is running for Team MHAGH this year for the Chevron Houston Marathon We asked Karen why she runs for a reason, and here is what she had to say:

“Growing up, my family and I rarely talked about our emotions – especially the negative ones. If we felt weak, sad, mad, or disagreed, we’d keep it inside to avoid confrontation. We’d go above and beyond to make the people around us happy, especially our family because as Filipinos, it was our understood duty. I was also under the impression that if you were in therapy, you were crazy or had a chemical imbalance - something inside you was broken.

Thanks to some very special people in my life, I've realized that is not the case. Taking care of your mental health is just as important as your physical health. I began to focus on really doing the work to discover my own self, decide what will make me happy, determine what that happiness will cost, and decide if I'm OK with that cost.

To further help me in my healing process and since I love to run, I've chosen to support Mental Health America of Greater Houston as part of the 2023 Chevron Houston Marathon Run for a Reason program.”

If the recent ruling of Roe V. Wade is causing you emotional/mental distress, we are here to help. If you are feeling anxious, overwhelmed, or upset it’s not always easy to prioritize your mental health. We recommend taking note of exactly how you’re feeling and allow yourself to feel those feelings. This may require spending some time alone to really evaluate your state of mind. It’s also important to determine if your stress is manifesting as physical symptoms.

Try taking a break from the news, go for a walk, or reach out to a friend or loved one for support. You may also find it helpful to familiarize yourself with your local resources and state laws. Most importantly, always remember, you are not alone!

If you feel like your stress and anxiety are inhibiting your ability to lead a productive life, it may be time to seek professional help. Head to our website to take a mental health screening today and explore local mental health resources.

This proclamation was read aloud on the steps of Reedy Chapel A.M.E. Church in Galveston, Texas on June 19, 1865. MHA of Greater Houston honors the vital role that Reedy and other houses of worship have historically played in the triage and first response to mental health crises like racial trauma brought about by injustice, discrimination, bias, and hate crimes.
