Peer Services Coordinator, Military Veteran Peer Network

Mental Health America (MHA) of Greater Houston is seeking military veteran candidates interested in implementing and strengthening veteran peer mentoring services by serving as the Military Veteran Peer Network (MVPN) representative in the greater Houston region.

The Veterans Behavioral Health (VBH) program at MHA of Greater Houston strives to ensure that the behavioral health needs of veterans are met and that every veteran finds their way to home and health. As the Regional Coordinator for the State of Texas’ Military Veteran Peer Network, we connect service members, veterans, and their families to local, state, and national resources. As the mentoring arm for area Veterans Treatment Courts, we engage justice-involved veterans with peer-to-peer support and health-and-wellness activities. Additionally, we provide varied trainings to build capacity within the community to support the overall wellbeing of veterans and their families.

Functions of the Coordinator position include, but are not limited to

  • Recruiting, training, and managing veteran volunteers to provide comprehensive peer support (mentoring and guidance) to Houston/Harris County veterans; as well as serve in the capacity of a mentor to area veterans.
  • Engaging in essential and open communication to support the growth, development, and retention of peer volunteers.
  • Serving as a qualified peer-to-peer support group facilitator and trainer of facilitators for approved curriculum.
  • Coordinating and scheduling community activities and social engagement opportunities to promote camaraderie and teamwork among veterans.
  • Coordinating veteran related resources and community services for veterans and veteran families through referral with community partners.
  • Collaborating, coordinating, and managing MVPN program with Assistant Peer Services, in partnership with VBH director and organization leadership.
  • Participating in jail diversion programs for veterans, such as veteran treatment courts, and providing direct peer services to the prison-in-reach programs.
  • Collecting, documenting, and reporting data on a monthly basis to meet contract and funder requirements.
  • Participating in regional and statewide meeting led by the Texas Veterans Commission and MVPN. Qualifications for PositionThe preferred candidate is an honorably discharged veteran (DD214 required) or a veteran family member; Bachelor’s degree in relevant field or equivalent experience. Prior experience working in veterans programming is highly desired.
