Veterans Behavioral Health Team Trains Law Enforcement Officers

The Veterans Behavioral Health team at Mental Health America of Greater Houston trained the Houston Police Department Mental Health Division, which is comprised of 43 officers, in the “Trauma Affected Veteran,” as part of a three-day course building on the crisis intervention training techniques taught in Basic Peace Officer Academy. It provides law enforcement officers, jailers, and telecommunicators a basic understanding of U.S. military culture, trauma, triggers, stressors, and de-escalation techniques when encountering veterans in crisis. The course is structured around 16 hours of lectures, videos, and class dialogues plus 8 hours of role play and hands-on practice to build confidence when encountering a veteran in crisis.

If you or your agency is interested in this course, contact T’Liza Kiel, Director of Veterans Behavioral Health at tkiel@mhahouston.org.
