Court Peer Mentor – Veterans Treatment Court (Veterans Only)

A Volunteer Court Peer Mentor serves as a coach, a guide, a role model, and an advocate for the individuals in which he/she is working. A mentor  encourages, guides and supports the mentee as they progress through the court process. This includes listening to the concerns of the veteran and assisting them with decision making about those needs.  Learn more about becoming a Volunteer Court  Peer Mentor.  This is not a paid position.

A Veteran Peer Mentor serves as an advocate for a Veteran who may be transitioning into civilian life or simply needs support and encouragement. Our mentors decide how much time they are able to devote to a mentee and in what type of setting such as one-on-one, group or social settings. BEITZ Support Group Facilitator (Veterans Only)

A BEITZ Support Group Facilitator implements and facilitates BEITZ support groups with Veterans who may be transitioning into civilian life or may simply need a form of support. Facilitators have the option to hold groups as often as you are able; preferably once a week, but once a month is also acceptable. BEITZ Support Groups may be facilitated in many different ways. The typical way of holding groups is in a conference style room, but outside locations may be utilized as well. Mental Health Awareness Intern / Volunteer
Children’s Mental Health Art Contest 

Our communications team supports all kinds of events and projects happening at MHA of Greater Houston. We are looking for someone with experience and an interest in writing, marketing, photography, planning events and more to enhance our ability to outreach to the community.  This internship/volunteer opportunity is particularly relevant, but not limited to students studying marketing, communications, graphic design, film production, social justice, education, psychology, sociology, community organizing and health communications with an interest in nonprofits. This position is also open to volunteers/interns with the ability/experience performing the essential duties and responsibilities an interest in nonprofits.

The ideal candidate would be an upper-level undergraduate or graduate-level college student in journalism, English, communications, marketing or public relations who is interested in hands-on experience in nonprofit communications and marketing. Applicants must be able to commit to a minimum of 10 hours a week to be considered. This internship is based out of our local office in Houston, Texas with the ability to work remotely.

Essential duties and responsibilities:

  • Research, Writing, Editing Projects
  • Administrative and Data Entry Support
  • Communications and Social Media Support
  • Supporting small and large-scale event planning
  • Design/Creative Projects
  • Special Projects as needed
  • Other duties may be assigned

Qualifications:

  • Excellent writing, editing, and research skills
  • Ability to work a flexible, fun, and strongly team-oriented environment
  • Superior communication and interpersonal skill
  • Detail-oriented and well-organized
  • Creativity and a can-do attitude
  • Must be able to prioritize, be dependable and manage projects
  • Able to work independently and take initiative
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office suite and desire to learn new software
  • Highest level of confidentiality and attention to detail
  • Strong organization and time management skills
  • Ability to multi-task and thrive in fast-paced environment

This position is UNPAID; however, volunteer hours or class credit may be available depending on the policies of the successful candidate’s College/University.

Social Media Volunteer / Intern

Our communications team supports all kinds of events and projects happening at MHA of Greater Houston. We are looking for someone with experience marketing using social media sites to enhance our ability to outreach to the community.

The ideal candidate would be an upper-level undergraduate or graduate-level college student in journalism, English, communications, marketing or public relations who is interested in hands-on experience in nonprofit communications and marketing. This position is unpaid; however, volunteer hours or class credit may be available depending on the policies of the successful candidate’s University, with a time commitment of 10 hours per week.

Essential duties and responsibilities:

  • Assist in the creation and implementation of social media marketing strategy and tactics
  • Perform social media market research
  • Update and maintain MHA Houston’s social media presence, including daily monitoring, posting, scheduling and reporting Facebook updates
  • Collaborate with staff on new ideas, directions, and tools for marketing and communications
  • Other duties may be assigned

Qualifications:

  • Exceptional, professional and detail-oriented organizational skills
  • Strong communication and writing skills
  • Graphic design and editing experience preferred.
  • Excellent computer literacy, Internet and social media savvy with experience using Microsoft Office suite, etc.
  • Prior communications, social media or nonprofit work experience is strongly preferred
  • Passion for Mental Health America of Greater Houston’s mission
  • Professional email etiquette and work habits
  • Ability to work a flexible, fun, and strongly team-oriented environment
  • Creativity and a can-do attitude
  • Knowledge of social media tools and computer literacy, including a working understanding of Excel

 Front Desk Greeter (Part-Time Volunteer)

MHA of Greater Houston is seeking a Front Desk Greeter (Part-time Volunteer) to be the welcoming face of the organization.

Responsibilities include:

  • Greeting and directing guests to the appropriate staff member
  • Respond to inquiries from visitors
  • Good interpersonal skills and an ability to work with all types of people and groups
  • Set up conference room(s) for meeting(s)
  • Good verbal and written communication skills
  • Light administrative work (copies, data entry, direct mailings, etc.)
  • Direct incoming calls using multi-line phone system

Qualifications/Requirements:

  • Knowledge of/or willingness to learn phone system and other office equipment
  • Ability to use Microsoft Word and Excel
